Officials say Washington will have a beefed-up police presence through the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, mirroring heightened security efforts across the country.

There are no specific terrorism threats against Washington or
anywhere else in the country.

However, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says every officer in her department will be working at some point over the next several days. Lanier says the public can expect to see more uniformed and plainclothes officers in sections of the city where people routinely gather.

In New York, the police department is deploying thousands of extra officers and will form a zone around the World Trade Center site for a Sunday observance.

Police in cities including Houston and Phoenix also will be doing more patrols.
