20-Yard Dash: R.E. Lee

STAUNTON (WHSV) -- David Tibbs enters his 20th season as head coach at R.E. Lee High School. While he's been vocal about how the Leemen are the only 2A team in the Valley District, his team has a history of finding ways to win.

Lee is dealing with the loss of more guys than usual to graduation, including the school's all-time leading rusher, Javon Chisley. The Leemen will likely see four freshman on the varsity field this year. But there's no change in what the players want at the end of the season, setting their sights on playing on Thanksgiving and then going even farther.

"Be in the playoffs. And I'd like to win a state championship,” Tibbs said. “In my mind, if you don't set your goal to be playing on December 13th, then you're selling your kid short.”

Tibbs said his players' goals aren't lofty expectations.

“It's a confidence factor. It's not cocky. They expect to win. They've put the work in. They've lifted the weights. They've conditioned. They've come to the off-season stuff. Big thing now is to just try and get knowledge, understanding. And you can't get experience. You need games to get experience. Some of the guys will play their way into more experience and we'll get there.”
