Harrisonburg Council Considers Golf Committee
Harrisonburg, Va. Harrisonburg is trying to figure out how to stop losing so much money on its city-owned golf course.

Harrisonburg resident Judy West geared up for her weekly game of golf Tuesday, joining a handful of other players at their favorite club, Heritage Oaks golf course.
West says, "It's a lot of fun, it's good exercise, and I get to enjoy the fun times we have together."
She has been a regular at the course for six years.
However, the support of West and other golfers hasn't been enough to make the course profitable.
It is $400,000 in debt, at the expense of the city.
Some city officials have suggested shutting it down, but the city council hasn't given up just yet.
Council member Dave Weins says, "I'm a big proponent of offering food out there. I think we lose a lot of business because we don't offer food."
Along with suggesting some of his own ideas, Weins is asking fellow council members to consider forming a committee that will find ways to make the course money.
"I think that would be tremendously valuable for me, for making votes on where we go with the golf course," adds Harrisonburg Mayor Kai Degner.
The council is on board with the plan to form the committee, and it's something golfers like West can get behind as well.
She says, "Just like a playground, we have to stop thinking it's going to make money, and look at what services it provides."
The city council has agreed to put off forming the committee until a resolution, with what it wants from the group, is presented at the next meeting.

I live across from the course and watch them mow property that could easily be put up for sale. Section off a few lots for custom homes and that would cut your debt in half. Also I have talked with Dave the pro about why both riders have to pay full price for a cart. If I play alone I pay full price ----if a friend and I play we both pay full price. Reduce the rate for the second person and people would play more often.
They need to sell beer!!
That's not a hard one to figure out. Come on people! Why would I pay the same amount of money to play on a course where I can't drink beer or buy hot food? Seriously, if this is supposed to be for Harrisonburg residents, why is the city charging so much money to play? Residents of the city and maybe even Rockingham county should at least get a discount. Heck, it's even cheaper at Gypsy Hill!! I can go to Lakeview, Shenvalee, etc. for the same price or for less money many other times and enjoy more amenities. Lower the price per round and I myself would come play, along with many others I'm sure.
