Gary Smith got Pendleton County back to the playoffs in 2009, his first year back as the Wildcats' head coach.
"That's what we expect every year. That's kind of been our barometer over here for a long time," says Smith, who stepped away from the Wildcats' sideline for four seasons. "We don't always succeed; we don't always make it. But that's always our objective, to make the playoffs."
Smith has a solid nucleus of starters back from last year's 6-5 team, including second-team all-state quarterback Tyler Gardiner.
"I can send Tyler with the rest of the quarterbacks out there. And I just go in there and drink water; sit down in the air conditioning for a while," laughs Smith. "It makes a world of difference."
