Redskins Gibbs Resigns Save Email Print

Joe Gibbs has resigned as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins. It comes three days after his team's playoff loss concluded a season marked by the killing of safety Sean Taylor.

A statement released by the team says the 67-year-old Gibbs will serve as a special adviser to owner Dan Snyder. Gibbs will discuss his decision at a 3 p.m. news conference.

The Redskins will begin a search for a new coach immediately. Among the certain candidates are two former head coaches on Gibbs' staff, Gregg Williams and Al Saunders.

Gibbs went 31-and-36 after emerging from NFL retirement and his NASCAR career to sign a five-year, $27.5 million contract in 2004. That includes a 1-and-2 record in post-season play.

Gibbs' resignation brings an apparent end to a Hall of Fame coaching career in which he twice raised the Redskins from mediocrity into a playoff team. But he ultimately failed in his goal of bringing the team back to the Super Bowl during his second stint in Washington.

Gibbs won three NFL titles during his first tenure from 1981-92. The second time around he took the team to the post-season in two of his four seasons.

BEST OF LUCK TO JOE AND HIS FAMILY. I THINK THAT THE NEXT COACH SHOULD BE EITHER OF THE CURRENT COORDINATORS WILLIAMS OR SAUNDERS. WHICH EVER GETS THE HEAD JOB SHOULD ALSO STICK WITH THEIR CURRENT ONES AS WELL LOTS OF COACHES ARE HEAD COACHES AND OFFENSIVE/DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS AT THE SAME TIME. MAYBE BRING IN SOMEONE TO SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES BUT LEAVE BOTH OF THESE GUYS ALONE. LET AL REALLY OPEN UP THAT HUGE PLAYBOOK EVERYONE SAYS HE HAS. INJURIES HURT OUR RUNNING GAME THIS YEAR. I THINK ALL THE PIECES ARE THERE FOR A TITLE RUN IF WE CAN JUST STAY HEALTHY. ADD SOME DEPTH,MAYBE ANOTHER IMPACT WR AND ANOTHER IMPACT SAFTEY/CB. I LIKE DOUGHTY BUT HE IS NOT THE MAN WE NEED AT THAT POSITION WE NEED ANOTHER HARD HITTER TO GO WOTH LANDRY (RIP #21).I REALLY LIKE OUR CHANCES IN 08 IF WE CAN STAY HEALTHY AND FILL THOSE 2 NEEDS. JASON CAMPBELL WILL REALLY TAKE OFF IN 08 AND SURPRISR EVERYONE WHEN HE GETS SOME REAL ATTENTION IN THE MVP BALLOTS.IF ALL COMES TOGETHER,12-14 WINS ARE POSS. N 08.

Gibbs can't be replaced and he will be missed, but he needs to be with his family right now. I do hope Snyder will continue on what Gibbs has done these last 4 years and keep it in house with the new head coach. They finally have that much needed chemistry that can win games.
