Former Harrisonburg High School basketball star Don Burgess is returning to his roots.
On Tuesday, Burgess was introduced as the new men's basketball coach at Bridgewater. He takes over for Bill Leatherman, who retired in July after 23 years on the Bridgewater bench.
Burgess, also known locally as "Don-Don," graduated from Harrisonburg in 1990, then played four years at Radford.
He's spent the last 13 years as an assistant at the Division One level, most recently at High Point. And now he gets to come home, as a head coach.
"For 13 years I've been grooming myself, preparing myself to be a head coach," said Burgess Tuesday, following his introductory press conference. "And to have the opportunity to be here at Bridgewater College? If I could do a backflip, I would do a backflip."
"I think he's going to make us a great team," says junior guard Dominic Trawick. "I think the rings might come this year. I might be calling that early, but I think that, just knowing him you get that vibe. A great coach."
