WVU Freshman Charged with Sexual Assault

A freshman running back for West Virginia University and another man are accused of sexually assaulting a woman following a party in Benwood.

Police Sgt. Zachary Hill says 18-year-old Mark Robert Sampson Jr. of Glen Dale and 19-year-old Carson Dale Koontz of Moundsville are both charged with second-degree sexual assault.

The 17-year-old woman told police two men picked her up from the party Sunday night and forced her to have sex with them in a parking lot of a former school.

Sampson was a walk-on player for the Mountaineers. Koontz is a former John Marshall High School baseball player.

Both men are free on bond. Attorney Herman Lantz, who represents Sampson, didn't immediately return a telephone call Tuesday. Kootnz does not yet have an attorney.
