JMU Falls in Closing Seconds in WNIT

Richmond sophomore guard Brittani Shells hit a jumper in the closing seconds to lift the Spiders to a 59-57 win over James Madison in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center.

Richmond sophomore guard Brittani Shells hit a jumper in the closing seconds to lift the Spiders to a 59-57 win over James Madison in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center.

Shells lofted the winning shot from just inside the three-point line with 3.5 seconds to go to give her team the lead. JMU sophomore guard Dawn Evans launched a desperation shot from the back-court that missed the mark at the buzzer.

JMU had rallied from five points down with 3:19 to play to tie the game at 57 with 23.8 seconds remaining. Redshirt junior guard Sarah Williams knocked down a three-pointer at 2:10, and sophomore forward/center Jalissa Taylor connected on two foul shots at 0:57 to tie the game.

Evans led the Dukes with 19 points, and Williams scored 14 and tied her career high with 13 rebounds. Also in double figures was sophomore forward/center Jalissa Taylor with ten.

Shells led Richmond with 19, and Johanna McKnight and Abby Oliver each scored 13. Nikita Thomas led her team with ten rebounds.

Richmond improved to 24-9 while JMU ended its season with a 24-10 record.
