Mickey Matthews suspended four players for violations of team rules, according to a release from James Madison University Monday.
Jace Edwards, Anthony McDaniel, Wyatt Johnson and Corey Davis have all been hit with varying suspensions due to a "violation of team rules."
Edwards started five games for the Dukes at quarterback during Justin Thorpe's suspension last season. A sophomore second string quarterback for the 2012 campaign, Edwards will be out for the season opener at St. Francis because he is recovering from shoulder surgery and was already out all spring practice.
McDaniel, who will be a redshirt sophomore defensive tackle, and Johnson a wide receiver has missed the past two seasons due to injury, both will miss the entire spring football practice schedule.
McDaniel started two games for the Dukes, and played in eight games in 2011.
Davis, who will be a redshirt sophomore cornerback, will miss seven spring practices, but is eligible to participate in the rest of the scheduled practices. Davis played in all 13 games last season.
“I have made these decisions and have the support of our administration,” Matthews said in the school's released statement. “We have high standards for our student athletes and I believe the punishment is justifiable for the violations by these young men.”
