The last time James Madison senior Charlie Newman was named captain of a football team, his season ended with a championship.
Newman was one of the captains of the 2005 Turner Ashby football team that won the AA state title.
This week, Newman was named one of five captains at JMU this season.
"It's probably one of the best things that could happen to me," says Newman, who hasn't missed a game in his three years at JMU. "I try to be a leader on and off the field for these guys. I'm a senior. And it's really, I'm going to take the role serious."
Fellow tight end Mike Caussin, offensive lineman Dorian Brooks, and defensive linemen Arthur Moats and Sam Daniels were the other four seniors elected captains by their teammates.
Coach Mickey Matthews says it's an honor that Newman, who also serves as the Dukes' long snapper, has earned.
"Charlie doesn't say a lot, but he's the type of young man that leads by example," says Matthews. "He's very intent on what he does. The guys have a lot of respect for him. It didn't surprise me at all."
