The Washington Nationals performed two firsts
-- they scored in the first inning for the first time and have
their first two-game win streak of the season.
Austin Kearns hit a three-run homer to stake Washington to an
early lead, Matt Chico earned his second major league victory and
the N-L-worst Nationals held off the New York Mets 4-to-3.
Washington set an N-L record by playing 22 games at the start of
a season without scoring a first-inning run. Kearns ended the
drought with a shot to left-center off Oliver Perez, who is
2-and-2. Chico is 2-and-2 with the win.
Until Kearns' second homer of the season, the Nationals were
hitting just .071 in the first inning of their games.
