The Southern Valley and Shenandoah districts have pulled the plug on their remaining regular season basketball games.

Because of the harsh winter weather that has hit the area this week, athletic directors from both districts decided Tuesday to cancel any games left on teams' schedules.

Harrisonburg athletic director Joe Carico says the Massanutten District schools will attempt to play their remaining games later this week.

In the Southern Valley and Shenandoah, play will resume next week in both the districts with the boys' and girls' district tournaments. Seeding for the tournaments will be based on the current standings.

In the Southern Valley, both six-team tournaments will begin Monday with quarterfinals. The top two teams in the district - Rockbridge and R.E. Lee on the boys' side, R.E. Lee and Fort Defiance in girls' - receive byes to Wednesday's semifinals.

The championship games will be played next Friday at Wilson Memorial, with consolation games the night before.

In the six-team Shenandoah, the tournaments won't begin until next Thursday, February 18. Semifinals will then be played that Friday, and championship games will be held that Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University.

The Page County, Central, and Luray boys all finished the regular season with identical 6-1 records in the district.

According to Stonewall Jackson athletic director Todd Fannin, a formula using factors including winning percentage, point differential, and common opponents was used to decide that Page and Central were the district's top two seeds, giving them byes into Friday's semifinals.

Riverheads and Buffalo Gap are the top two seeds in the Shenandoah District girls' tournament.

I'm extremely disappointed as a graduate from Luray H.S that my alma mater would be intimidated enough of a crowd or student section that they would rather have the administrators push for the games to be played at a neutral site and succeed in doing so. This is an OUTRAGE and our Bulldogs should want to play them at their court to try to embarrass them. Im excited in looking forward to seeing the outcome of this debacle

This is ridiculous. Allow the ladies and gents to play the darn games. I'm not sure what dough head made this decision, but they were extremely miss guided. Think of all the senior young men and women, that will not get to get a senior night, or finish there season. This is unfortunate for all parties involved and truly a mistake on behalf of the athletic administrations. In summary, this event is terrible for high school sport and all parties affiliated in the mishap. LET THEM PLAY THE GAMES.

It is a shame for Holly Morgan of Buffalo Gap who is closing in on the 1000 point mark in her career. With 8 days before the tourney starts it seems lihe we could have squezzed in the final 3 games before district tourney play. With two weeks between the regular season and tournament it truly is a whole new season.
