Gladiators Fall in State Semis

Top-ranked and unbeaten J.I. Burton opened the Division 1 semifinals on a 13-4 run and never looked back, ending Riverheads' season in the process at the Siegel Center Thursday.

Top-ranked and unbeaten J.I. Burton (28-0) opened the Division 1 semifinals on a 13-4 run and never looked back, ending Riverheads' season in the process at the Siegel Center Thursday.

The Raiders advanced to Friday's state final with a 67-53 victory and will take on the winner between Ervinton and Surry Co.

After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half, Riverheads closed the gap to within five early in the third quarter.

However, Burton then went on an 11-3 run to pull away.

The Raiders shot 50 percent from the field, while the Gladiators connected on 16-of-51 attempts for 31 percent.

Senior Rebecca Grubb led RHS with 17 points. Kelsie Floyd finished with 15, and Brittany Heizer added nine points and 13 rebounds.

Burton's Ra'Shelle Miller finished with 23 points and 19 rebounds.

Riverheads, which was playing in their first state tournament in 22 years, ends its season 18-4.
