Former Harrisonburg football star Alex Owah has been charged with attempting to purchase alcohol while underage.

According to Harrisonburg/Rockingham General District Court online records, Owah was arrested by Harrisonburg Police May 9.

He's due in court June 23, according to court records. If convicted of the misdemeanor, Owah could face up to a year in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500.

Owah, a 2009 graduate of Harrisonburg, enlisted at East Carolina in January following a semester at Hargrave Military Academy. Owah, a running back, was not listed on the Pirates' post-spring depth chart.

Owah originally gave a verbal commitment to Virginia as a high school junior, but reopened his recruitment during his senior year after failing to meet the Cavaliers' academic requirements.

The underage alcohol charge is Owah's latest run-in with local police.

He was arrested for marijuana possession in May 2009, but those charges were dismissed last August.

In April 2008, Owah was one of eleven Harrisonburg High School football players listed on a police affidavit as part of the investigation of alleged distribution of prescription pain pills in the team's locker room.

According to the affidavit, Owah told police he had helped plan an October 2007 armed robbery that also included fellow Harrisonburg students Ronnell Brandon and Stedman Jones.

Owah also revealed during that police interview that Brandon had given prescription pills to teammates, including Owah, before football games.

Brandon pleaded guilty to several drug charges in November 2008. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, with all but a year and seven months suspended, in February 2009.
