The first-ever football game at East Rockingham High School is a little more than two months away.

And the inaugural Eagles are starting to get excited.

"I'm looking forward to it. I mean, it's great. You see all this out here, it's brand new," said rising senior lineman/linebacker Tucker Wood, pointing at the Eagles' not-yet-finished home stadium. "A chance to maybe make a name for a school that hasn't been around."

"A new school; a new football team," said rising junior running back William Simpson. "Like, I get to be the first person to wear No. 32, my football number. Wear the new helmets, and all the new equipment. Be the first in the new school."

"It's crazy. We've got new sleds. The helmets," said rising junior Zachary Kibler. "I'm in love."

Those three players are among the 84 participants at East Rockingham first-year head coach Donnie Coleman's football camp this week.

"It's just a brand new start," Coleman said. "The kids are all excited. The coaches are all excited. We were talking about it as a staff. It was hard to sleep last night and the night before, just getting ready."

Coleman admits he's still adjusting to life both at a new school, because he had been on Charlie Newman's staff at Turner Asbhy, and as a head coach.

"We're working on it. We're working out the kinks here and there. Trying to find ball bags," he said with a chuckle. "But we've got it all together. The kids are rolling, so we're off and running."

The work really begins for the Eagles August 2, when they begin preseason camp.

East Rockingham's season begins at home August 27, against the program Coleman's players were part of last year, Spotswood.

"It blows my mind. My dad played at Spotswood, my uncle played at Spotswood," said Kibler. "Now I get to come down here and start a legacy for the new school."

"That'll be interesting," said Wood. "Some of those guys are still my friends, but on the field it doesn't matter. On the field you're going at it. We're there to win."
