DANVILLE, Va. - Bridgewater College turned in its best shooting performance of the season Monday afternoon to defeat Averett University, 94-85, in non-conference men's basketball action.
The Eagles made exactly 50 percent of their 72 shots against the Cougars to score a season-high 94 points
Bridgewater (5-3) put five players in double figures, led by Ed Reddick's 19 points. Daniel McClain and Ronnie Thomas scored 14 points each, followed by Tavis Stapleton with 12 and Zach Hunter with 10. Reddick just missed a double-double as he also pulled down nine rebounds. Thomas filled up the stat sheet for the second straight game as he added seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Eagles used a 7-0 spurt to open up a double-digit lead with 7:38 left in the opening half. Zach Hunter hit a jumper and Kenneth Waugh knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Eagles on top 25-17. Zach Hunter then hit two free throws for a 10-point, 27-17, Bridgewater lead.
The lead was still 10, 34-24, when Waugh drained a jumper with 4:24 left, but the Cougars answered with a 10-2 run to cut the lead to two points, 36-34, with 1:50 remaining on the first-half clock.
Reddick scored from down low and Matthew Hunter followed with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to seven, 41-34. Alex Lopez hit a 3-pointer for the Cougars, but Matthew Hunter responded with his second 3-pointer of the half to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 44-37 lead.
Averett made another run at the Eagles early in the second half and once again trimmed the deficit to just two points, 53-51, when Jacolby Hawkins knocked down a 3-pointer at the 14:30 mark.
The Eagles then put together a 13-2 flurry to open up a 13-point lead. Reddick ignited the run with a short jumper, followed by buckets from Stapleton and McClain to push the margin to eight. Hawkins momentarily stopped the Eagles surge with a jumper, but a 3-pointer by Stapleton and buckets from Reddick and McClain gave Bridgewater a 66-53 lead with 11:23 left in the game.
The Eagles led by as many as 16 points before the Cougars made one last run, cutting the lead to seven, 90-83, with 1:32 left to play. Bridgewater hit 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to finish off the 94-85 victory.
Bradley Robinson led Averett (1-5) with 26 points and 10 boards. Carter Jones scored 18 points and Hawkins added 11.
