After having their starting pitching staff depleted with four games over the weekend, EMU Coach Ben Spotts slated Wednesday as a "staff day" against rival Bridgewater College. The Royals kept BC off-balance for the first six innings before the Eagles took over for a 12-4 decision in Harrisonburg.
Eastern Mennonite found themselves in a hole early, as the Eagles scored four runs in their first two at-bats to skip to the lead. But the men rallied in the bottom of the second. Phillip Jordan (West Point, VA/Christchurch) got things rolling with a two-out, two-run single. Adam Posey (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) followed with an infield single, and Jordan touched home on a throwing error to slice the lead down to 4-3.
Bridgewater plated two more in the third, and the score stayed 6-3 until the seventh, when the visitors scored three runs. Ryan McAlister (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) tripled in Posey in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-4, but he was stranded at third. BC then added another three spot in the eighth to produce the final 12-4 margin.
Jordan, Posey and McAlister combined for six of EMU's eight hits. Jordan was 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Posey and McAlister each had two hits as well.
Chris DeWald (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) started on the hill for the Royals and was chased in the second inning, giving up four runs to fall to 1-3. Ryan Henschel (New Market, VA/Stonewall Jackson) pitched well over the next 3.1 innings, allowing only one earned run, before the rest of EMU's seven pitchers took the hill.
The loss drops Eastern Mennonite to 14-18 overall and 4-10 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. They travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday for a big doubleheader with the Marlins.
