Harrisonburg's Joe Carico is stepping down as the school's athletic director so he can return to the classroom.
Harrisonburg City Schools issued a release Tuesday afternoon announcing its search for a new athletic director for the 2011-12 school year.
Carico said he made the decision to step down so he could resume his teaching career. He also plans to remain on the Harrisonburg football coaching staff under new head coach Chris Thurman.
Carico also mentioned the long hours the come with the athletic director job as another reason for his decision.
"It'll be nice to have an off-season," he said.
Carico has been athletic director at Harrisonburg for the past six seasons.
