Tyler Thornton limited James Madison to one earned run in 7 1/3 innings and the College of Charleston struck for three or four runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away for a 12-2 win over James Madison on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.

CofC remained in first place at 27-12 overall and 10-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. JMU fell to 12-24 overall and 4-7 in league play.

Thornton improved to 3-4 with two runs allowed, one earned, on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. Sophomore Mark Gunst (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Freshman Josh Wyatt (Eden, Md./James M. Bennett) was the lone JMU player with multiple hits in a nine-hit team effort. Junior center fielder Kevin Husum (Panama City, Fla./Bay) and sophomore catcher Bobby San Martin (Fairfax, Va./Centreville) each had RBIs.

Designated hitter Nick Pappas and catcher Ryan Welke each had three of the Cougars’ 17 hits. First baseman Carl Wise and shortstop Champ Rowland each had two hits with three RBIs. Rowland also had two walks and three runs scored.

JMU scored first in the second inning as senior right fielder Tyler Gregory (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) singled, moved to second on an error and scored on San Martin’s RBI single.

That lead lasted until the fourth when Charleston struck for four runs on four hits, all after two groundouts to start the frame. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Rowland singled in two runs for the lead. Blake Butler drove in a run and a fielding error contributed to the final run.

The Cougars picked up a Morgan Phillips RBI single in the fifth and then made it 8-1 in the sixth on a Gunnar Heidt RBI single and Wise two-run single.

JMU picked up one run in the seventh on Husum’s RBI groundout. CofC added another four-run inning in the seventh with two bases-loaded walks, a wild pitch and a Wise RBI single.

JMU returns home for Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. non-conference game hosting VMI.
