HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, the Royals gave their fans a treat with a tension-filled 2-0 win over Cairn.
Eastern Mennonite had an edge in the flow of the first half, and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Sophomore Mark Mast (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) stole the ball from a Cairn defender along the end line, and then beat the goalie for his first score of the year.
The Royals continued to control the tempo in the second, but couldn't add any cushion. As EMU made some substitutions, the Highlanders started to surge. They nearly scored the equalizer on a shot which trickled just wide with 11 minutes to play.
Eastern Mennonite pressed back, and Sebastian Olguin (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) bounced a shot off the left post with four minutes to go. The men finally added some insurance in the final minute. Jonathan Bush (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) knocked a ball off the crossbar, and Olguin was right there to put in the goal, making it 2-0 with 28 seconds left.
The men finished with a solid 20-6 edge in shots, including 9-1 on goal. EMU also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
With a record evened at 1-1-1, the Royals stay home this weekend, playing back-to-back games. On Saturday, Dickinson visits at 2:00pm. Then Sunday, Stevenson pays a visit, also with a 2:00pm start time.
