DANVILLE, Va. - Bridgewater's five-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday afternoon when the Eagles lost a close 2-1 contest at Averett University.
Averett got on the board early on a goal by Mark-Antony Liljeklev just 6:23 into the first half of play.
The score remained 1-0 until the 66th minute when Averett's Kevin Vigebo scored to put the Cougars on top, 2-0.
The Eagles, who have rallied from behind several times this season, tried to mount another comeback against the Cougars. Bridgewater got on the board in the 76th minute when Kevin Gorman put a shot on goal. Averett goalie Nate Barker stopped Gorman's shot, but Zach Hosler cleaned up the rebound and scored with his shot to make it a 2-1 game.
The Eagles had one shot and one corner down the stretch, but were unable to score the tying goal.
Averett held a 19-13 edge in shots with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Bridgewater goalie TJ Martin finished with five saves.
The Eagles, now 5-2, return to action Saturday at home against Randolph-Macon. Game time is 11 a.m.
