For Stonewall Jackson's Erin Goodier, playing basketball is all about the challenge.
“I like basketball because it's really intense,” said Erin, “You kind of have to give 100 percent of your effort all the time, every day. Practices and everything. You don't have to try hard for everything, but basketball is that one thing you really have to try hard at all the time.”
Her coach noticed her passion both on and off the court.
“Erin brings a passion for everything that she does, which always improves your team. She's an intense competitor. Erin is very positive with people in general and she's just a good person,” said Jeff Burner, Erin's coach.
In the classroom, she brings that same stopping power because when she hits the books, it's still a competition.
“School has always been something interesting to me because I get to know more stuff,” said Erin, “Pushing myself the extra mile is actually competitive. I like to push myself further and be the best, or at least the best I can be.”
Her best is pretty good! Her 4.24 grade point average ranks third in her class, she's a member of several clubs and she's starred in three different sports.
“Erin pushes me as a teacher because it means you can be more challenging. You can integrate and synthesize more information, you don't just have to teach isolated words. She takes risks, and is creative. I don't think for Erin, school is intimidating,” said Peggy Dunstan, Erin's Spanish teacher.
Erin discussed her plans for the future.
“I want to go to U.Va. or William and Mary or maybe JMU,” said Erin, “I want to be a psychologist I think, or maybe a professor in psychology. As far as sports goes, I might do club sports or something but I kind of want to focus on academics when I get to college.”
When she does focus, watch out because she's really good.
