James Madison senior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) is the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. This is the seventh time this season the senior has garnered the league’s weekly honor.
Burkholder scored 30 points to lead JMU to an 86-49 win over Northeastern last Wednesday. She hit on 11 of her 18 shot attempts to shoot 61.1-percent from the field, including a career-best eight made three-pointers. She added eight rebounds and an assist in 30 minutes of action. Her eight made threes gives her 102 on the season, moving her into second on the conference’s single-season list. She trails only the 112 made threes by Dawn Evans (2007-11) in 2009-10 on the all-time list. Her three 30-point games is the most hit the conference this season.
The Preseason CAA Player of the Year finished the regular season averaging 19.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest. She shot 40.8-percent from the fielding, including hitting 37.8-percent of her threes and 87.1-percent of her free throws.
UNCW’s Brie Mobley was also honored by the CAA on Monday, claiming CAA Rookie of the Week.
JMU returns to action on Friday, March 14 at noon at the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., in the CAA Quarterfinals. The Dukes await the winner of the first round game between eighth-seeded William & Mary and ninth-seeded UNCW.
