STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- Riverheads High School's Kyle Bishop is at his best when that ball is in his hands.

"I just love being able to be in control of the game. That's the best part of it. You can slow down the game, speed it up, it's whatever you want to do. You're in control," said Bishop.

Last season, his team gave him control on the biggest of stages. Bishop threw a complete game shutout in Riverheads first ever win in a baseball state championship game.

"He is such a great competitor. He doesn't let anything bother him, and his composure speaks volumes," said Rodney Painter, Bishop's baseball coach.

Bishop competes hard on and off the field. He's an All-Region player on the diamond and plays golf and basketball for the Gladiators, all while maintaining a 4.1 GPA.

"He knows what he wants to do. He's going to be competitive about it, but he's also very driven to excel. He makes it look easy, but I know how hard he works," said Scott Cassell, Bishop's golf coach.

"I mean, I'm a student-athlete, so definitely academics come first, and sports aren't going to get you everywhere in life. So, I want to do the best for myself now so my future will be better," said Bishop.

With regards to his future, Bishop plans on applying to Virginia Tech, where he hopes to major in civil engineering; however, until then, he'll continue to set a good example for his peers.

"Do it the right way so they know how to do it the right way. Try your hardest. That's always one of the biggest things so they are always giving 100% effort. I've always been taught that if you give the right amount of effort that it'll just all work out," said Bishop is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
