BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Fifth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan withstood two late goals Saturday to hold off the Bridgewater College Eagles, 3-2, in ODAC action.
The Marlins scored early when the Eagles defense misplayed a ball in the box and Breanne Ingargiola cleaned up the loose ball and scored from 15 yards out for a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the first half.
Virginia Wesleyan scored again in the 19th minute when Jessica Edelman scored from 12 yards out with Kerry Knauss recording the assist for a 2-0 lead.
The Marlins added their final goal just 1:10 into the second half when a centering pass from Ingargiola led to a goal by Kristen Mack and a 3-0 Virginia Wesleyan lead.
The Eagles got on the board by taking advantage of a misplay by the Marlins keeper. Amanda Peregory found the back of the net from 15 yards out to make the score 3-1.
The Eagles made it a one-goal deficit with 1:36 left on the game clock. Jacey Kelley fended off a Marlins defender to gain possession in the box and then blasted a shot past the keeper from 15 yards out to make the score 3-2.
Bridgewater had one last gasp in the final 10 seconds with a direct kick from 35 yards out, but the Marlins were able to deny the Eagles a shot attempt as they finished off the 3-2 victory.
The Marlins held a 16-6 edge in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Two Bridgewater keepers combined for eight saves with Lindsey McDole finishing with five saves in the final 35 minutes of the second half.
The Eagles are now 9-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 mark in the ODAC. The Marlins stayed unbeaten with a 14-0-1 overall record and a 9-0-1 record in conference play.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a conference matchup. Game time is 4:15 p.m.
