BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College outfielder Jonathan Mason has been named the Division III National Hitter of the Week as voted on by a panel of D-III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Mason led the Eagles to 3-1 record with a .688 average (11-for-16) and a 1.125 slugging percentage. He started his week with a 3-for-4 effort against No. 12 Shenandoah, scoring two runs and knocking in two with a home run. He followed that with a 3-for-3 day at the plate in a win against Washington and Lee, scoring two runs with a triple and two stolen bases against the Generals. He was 1-for-2 with a stolen base in a loss to No. 8 Christopher Newport in the first game of a doubleheader. In a second-game win, he was 4-for-7 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs. He struck out just once in 20 plate appearances in the four games. For the week, he scored seven runs and drove in six.
Mason ranks among the ODAC leaders in several statistical categories including batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, home runs and RBIs.
Mason was also named the ODAC Player of the Week and was selected to the D3Baseball.com National Team of the Week for his play.
Trine University's Phil Stakely was named the D-III National Pitcher of the Week. Stakely became the first Trine pitcher to toss a no-hitter in conference play during a 10-0 win over Albion. In the seven-inning game he faced just one batter over the minimum. He struck out three batters, walked one and hit a batter.
