HARRISONBURG, Va. - Behind a 16-point, eight-rebound effort by redshirt-senior forward Rayshawn Goins (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville (Cincinnati State)), the James Madison men's basketball squad defeated Philadelphia 77-69 in their exhibition match-up on Sunday afternoon in the Convocation Center.

Goins scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half in addition to three rebounds and a block. He powered up his defense in the second half, grabbing five more rebounds and pulling a steal for the Dukes.

Redshirt-senior guard A.J. Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Harmony Community School (Wyoming)) led the Dukes in scoring on Saturday, putting 17 points on the board, including three from beyond the arc. Freshman Charles Cooke (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) also dropped three treys on the day, accounting for all nine of his points in his debut, and fellow freshman Ron Curry (Pennsauken, N.J./Paul VI) tied him with nine points for third-most on the team. All three Dukes contributed a steal to the team's day-total of seven.

As a team, JMU shot 46.4 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from three-point range and 55.2 percent from the line. The Dukes were able to hold the Rams to shooting 39.3 percent from the field and just 25.0 percent from behind the arc. Madison also out-rebounded Philadelphia 41 to 36.

Philadelphia began the game on a 7-1 run, but a timeout gave JMU the chance to settle into the game. The Dukes quickly went on a 12-5 run to take the lead at 16-12. Just over two minutes later, Madison broke a 20-all tie to take the lead for good with 10:10 left to go in the first half.

Up by three at the start of the second half, JMU cushioned its lead with a 21-5 run against the Rams. The Dukes would not allow Philadelphia close the gap to smaller than seven points at any time after the run.

JMU will begin its regular season on Thursday, Nov. 15 in the Progressive Legends Classic at No. 13 UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif. Tip-off is set for 11 p.m. EST.
