FootballScoop.com is reporting Everett Withers is the next head football coach at James Madison University. Withers is currently the co-defensive coordinator at The Ohio State University.
As of mid-afternoon Friday, a high-level JMU source said no football coach had been hired, and no official contract had been signed.
WHSV Sports can confirm Withers is the primary candidate and barring any unforeseen complications is expected to take the helm of the JMU football program. A press conference and official announcement from the school is expected Friday, but as of now has not been announced.
In 2011, Withers took over the North Carolina football program after Butch Davis was fired July 27th, just before the season started. Withers led the Tar Heels to a 7-6 record and a loss in the Independence Bowl.
Withers and UNC beat the Dukes in the season opener at Chapel Hill, 42-10.
Since that season as interim head coach, Withers has worked at Ohio State as a defensive coach. The Buckeyes have accumulated a 24-1 record with Withers on staff.
Withers would bring 25 years of coaching experience to The Valley, including seven seasons in the NFL.
