Second-half Onslaught Propels Eagles To 79-46 Victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Bridgewater College outscored Houghton College 51-21 in the second half Friday evening to take a 79-46 victory in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Captains Shootout hosted by Christopher Newport University.

The Eagles, now 7-3 on the season, will meet Christopher Newport in Saturday's championship game beginning at 6:00 p.m. CNU, now 7-1 and ranked No. 19 in the latest D3hoops,com Top 25, defeated Heidelberg, 65-53, in Friday's second game.

The Eagles played its entire roster of 15 players in the first half of Friday's game and struggled to a 28-25 halftime lead.

Bridgewater outscored the Highlanders 10-2 in the first four minutes of the second half to push its lead to double figures. Kenneth Waugh opened the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer and Daniel McClain scored from the paint to put the Eagles on top 35-23. After Seth Shay scored for Houghton, Tavis Stapleton hit two jumper and Ed Reddick converted 1-of- 2 free throws, making the score 38-27.

The Eagles broke the game open with a 24-3 run over a six-minute stretch beginning at the 12-minute mark.

Two foul shots by Aaron Adams, a jumper by Stapleton and 1-of-2 at the line from Kordero Thompson pushed the lead to 15 points, 49-34, with 10:48 left.

After a pair of foul shots by Houghton's Chris Enlow, Bridgewater reeled off the next seven points to lead by 20. Thompson started the flurry with a layup and Adams followed with a jumper. David Larson then converted a three-point play, making the score 56-36.

After a free throw by Houghton's Matthew Ball, the Eagles finished off their run with 12 straight points to push their lead to 31. Thompson once again ignited the run with a layup before Adams knocked down a 3-pointer and then added a layup, making the score 63-37. A 3-pointer by Stapleton and a layup by Kyle Welty made the score 68-37 with 6:22 left to play.

Stapleton led a trio of Eagles in double figures with 15 points. Adams scored 14 and Waugh finished with 11. Bridgewater owned a decisive 51-30 advantage on the boards, led by Stapleton's eight rebounds. Reddick, Thompson and Waugh each added five boards
