Spotswood High School's Austin Nicely signed with the Houston Astros today.
The left-handed pitcher was drafted in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Astros with the 287th overall pick. He signed a deal worth about $610,000.
"It's an incredible feeling; definitely a blessing. It's something you dream about as a little kid, and I look forward to making it a reality. It's defintely a dream come true," said Nicely.
Because Nicely signed with the Astros, he immediately becomes a professional and is ineligible to play NCAA baseball or in any other amateur league.
Nicely, a 6-foot-1, 170 pound left-hander had signed to play at Virginia for Brian O'Connor.
"It was definitely a tough decision. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to choose between or do. It just came down to the opportunity to the opportunity that was at hand," said Nicely.
He was the first high school player from Virginia to be selected in this year's draft.
The Region III first team selection was a perfect 5-0 in the regular season on the mound, with a miniscule 1.73 ERA for the Blazers.
Nicely will have a community signing ceremony at Spotswood High School on Sunday.
