Freshman Shannan Thorne led all players with 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds on the evening as the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team overcame a sloppy performance to earn a 54-40 victory over the Roanoke Maroons in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
After a sloppy start by both teams left the score at 15 each with under five minutes to play in the opening stanza, Bridgewater (12-6, 8-5 ODAC) used a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 lead with 3:55 left in the first stanza, forcing a Roanoke timeout.
Out of the timeout, the two teams traded scores before a trey from Roanoke (4-12, 4-8 ODAC) guard Taylor Duggins cut the Bridgewater lead to 24-20 at the intermission.
Freshman guard Kelsey Taylor paced the Eagles in the first half with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Out of the intermission, both teams struggled as they combined for eight turnovers in the first three minutes before trading scores, with the Eagles leading by a 30-25 tally with 13:28 remaining.
Roanoke cut the Bridgewater lead to two with less than 11 minutes to play before a jumper from Rebecca Reifsnider extended the lead back to four at a 34-30 margin.
The Maroons again chipped the lead to a single point at a 36-35 margin before Bridgewater responded with a Shannan Thorne jumper in the paint and a step-back trey from Jenny Logan as the Eagles pushed their lead to a then game-high six points at a 41-35 gap with six and a half to play.
Bridgewater pushed its lead to as high as eight with 2:16 to play in the game before a technical foul on the Roanoke bench allowed the Eagles to extend their lead to a 49-40 margin with 85 ticks remaining.
Down the stretch, Roanoke sent the Eagles to the charity stripe multiple times where they were effective en route to earning a 54-40 victory over the Maroons to pick up win number 12 of the year.
Thorne's 17 led two Eagles players in double figures behind a 4-for-9 effort from the floor and a 9-of-13 performance from the charity stripe. Junior guard Jessica Mullen knocked in 16 points in the win.
Both teams ended up tied on the glass at 45 boards each after Bridgewater dominated the first half. Thorne led the way with 12 rebounds.
Guard Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 10 points on the evening as Roanoke shot at a frigid 26% clip from the floor.
Senior forward Nicci Moats led the Maroons with 12 rebounds on the evening before leaving the game late in the second half with an undisclosed injury.
Bridgewater is back in action on Thursday evening in Nininger Hall when Hollins comes to town. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
