Va. Beach Pondering Possible Pro Sports Future

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Beach's city council is preparing to vote on whether to keep pursuing a professional sports franchise.

On Tuesday, the council will decide whether it wants to keep negotiating to build an 18,500 seat arena at the oceanfront. The arena would only be built if an NBA or NHL team would relocate there.

A likely target for relocation would be the NBA's Sacramento Kings, which failed to reach an agreement with the city to build a new arena there.

The Virginia Beach proposal calls for building a $300 million arena with state, local and private money. The unidentified team would not be asked to contribute.

Gov. Bob McDonnell says he supports bringing a team to the region, but he's not including any funding for it in his proposed budget. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
