Virginia Softball Coach Resigns After 6 years

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage says softball coach Eileen Schmidt has resigned.

The former Cavaliers catcher and the school's first softball All-American compiled a 145-168 record in six years at Virginia, that was 1-20 in Atlantic Coast Conference play in 2007. Her teams were 38-81 in conference play and won the first NCAA softball tournament game in school history in the 2010 season.

Virginia finished 21-28 this season, but won just four of 21 conference games.

Schmidt says she's proud of the improvement Virginia has made, but says the job is not finished. She says her alma mater deserves new leadership and energy to take the next steps toward steady success.

Virginia says a national search for Schmidt's successor will begin immediately.
