BLACKSBURG - For the first time in history, Virginia Tech is headed to Orlando, Fla., for a postseason football bowl game.

Virginia Tech (6-6) meets Big East Conference representative Rutgers (9-3) in the Russell Athletic Bowl at 5:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 28 in the 65,438-seat Citrus Bowl Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN with a national radio broadcast on ESPN Radio.

It’s the 20th-straight bowl appearance for the Hokies, the third-longest active streak in college football.

“This has been a different year than we are accustomed to at Virginia Tech, but we won our last two games and are extremely proud to be going to the Russell Athletic Bowl,” Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. “We are also proud to be one of just three schools that have gone to 20 or more consecutive bowls. We appreciate the opportunity to play in the Russell Athletic Bowl and we are going to work extremely hard to represent the ACC and Virginia Tech in a way that will show we are worthy of this selection.”

Virginia Tech and Rutgers University will be meeting for the 15th time in football when they meet in the Russell Athletic Bowl. The Hokies lead the series, which began in 1920, 11-3 but the two haven’t met since 2003 - Tech’s last season in the Big East. Rutgers won the first three games in the series, coming in 1920, 1953 and 1992, but the Hokies have won the last 11 games between the two. From 1992-2003, the two were members of the Big East Conference together with the Hokies winning 11 of 12 conference games.

Virginia Tech will be playing in the Citrus Bowl Stadium for the third time, losing to Florida State 33-20 in 1991 and beating UCF 44-21 in 2000. Both of those games were regular season contests.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando,” said Jim Weaver, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics. “We have never had an opportunity to be there in the past and we understand it’s an outstanding bowl experience for the participants.”

Virginia Tech will be the designated home team in this game and will occupy the east stands.
