LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a late charge by the Bridgewater College Eagles to take a 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon in ODAC action.
The Eagles are now 6-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the ODAC while the Generals improve to 6-2, 4-1 in conference play.
The Generals took an early lead off a corner kick in the 17th minute of play. W&L's Haley Ward took the corner and her kick deflected off Bridgewater goalie Chelsea Steele and bounced into the net for a 1-0 W&L lead.
The margin stayed 1-0 until the 58th minute when W&L's Katherine Rush got behind the BC defense and booted the ball to the right corner of the goal past Steele to make the score 2-0.
The Eagles battled back and got on the board in the 71st minute when Paxton Sauerwald dribbled 20 yards into the box and her shot from nine yards out beat W&L keeper Addie Healy to make it a one-goal game.
The Eagles had six shot attempts in the final 15 minutes, but were unable to score the equalizer. Ashley Crossman put a shot on goal with just under four minutes to play, but Healy came up with the save to preserve the 2-1 lead.
Steele finished the contest with two saves while Healy recorded five saves for the Generals.
W&L held a slim 16-14 edge in shots while the Eagles finished with a 10-7 edge in corners.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they travel to Roanoke College for another key ODAC contest. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
