Allison Botkin: WHSV Student Athlete of the Week April 24

Allison will graduate as the co-valedictorian at Broadway high school.

BROADWAY, Va. (WHSV) -- Broadway's Allison Botkin has played nearly every position on the soccer field. But no matter where the senior is on the pitch, our Student Athlete of the Week has always been a leader.

And that helped the Gobblers achieve a feat that was never reached before.

At the beginning of last season, Allison's coach asked her to make a change.

"When I took over as coach, I switched Allison's position. Which is a lot to ask of a player who is already established on the high school team," Broadway girls' soccer coach Randy Black said.

Alison made the switch from attack to outside midfield.

"I was excited for the challenge, “ Allison said. “I knew that this was a role that I could help other people score in. It would help a lot of other people step into the spotlight and it would allow me to assist them and help the team more and get towards the team role of winning and that was the main idea.”

While the Broadway senior made her teammates better, her own game also improved.

"Her shots are stronger, her crosses have gotten better,” Black said. “Her leadership continues to just dominate."

And the result? Allison became the team leader in assists and was named to last year's all-district team, while the Gobblers recorded the school's first-ever winning season in the history of Broadway soccer.

But her leadership also extends into her academics.

"She is very well poised,” Kara Bates, Allison's Agroecology teacher said. “She makes wonderful eye contact when she speaks, she speaks with authority, with knowledge. I always enjoyed having her in class. Especially during her class discussions."

Allison will stay close to home, attending JMU in the fall to major in kineseology. For now, she's making the most of her final days on this field.

"I just know that I have to give everything in every practice that I have and in every game. Just leave it all out on the field. I don't have any regrets looking back knowing that I could have played harder, run faster, trying to make sure I guive 110 percent on the field at all times."
