Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Mary Baldwin, 82-35

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In a non-conference matchup in Nininger Hall, the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team turned 36 Mary Baldwin turnovers into a 44-9 advantage in points off of turnovers as the Eagles rolled to an 82-35 victory on Monday Night.

With the win, the Eagles have won four straight games.

After early offensive woes from both teams, Bridgewater (5-5) used a number of Mary Baldwin turnovers to jump out to a 14-2 lead midway through the opening stanza. Sophomore Shannan Thorne netted six of Bridgewater's 14 points during the run, including the final four points.

Mary Baldwin (0-11) got back on the board with a Jazmine Brooks layup to cut the lead back to 10 before junior Molly Shelley knocked in a layup to open up a 9-0 scoreless run to push the Eagles out to a 23-4 advantage with 10:19 left in the first half. Shelley capped off the run with a pair of free throws.

Following the Bridgewater run, a pair of layups from Shamanda Washington put the Fighting Squirrels back on the board and brought the score to 23-6 with eight and change to play in the first half.

Bridgewater rounded out the first half with 21 of the final 28 points to build a 44-13 halftime lead. The Eagles forced 22 Mary Baldwin turnovers over the first 20 minutes of play.

Out of the halftime break, the Fighting Squirrels netted four of the first six points to bring the lead to under 30 points before the Eagles used a big run to effectively put the game away.

Senior guard Jessica Mullen knocked in a layup to kick start a 14-5 run to extend the Bridgewater lead to 60-22 with 12:39 to play in the contest.

After a Washington layup, the Eagles responded with five straight points from Katelynn Hottinger to build the lead to 40 points.

Washington again responded in a big way with seven points to draw the Bridgewater advantage down to under 40 before the Eagles ripped off a 10-2 run to extend the lead to a game-high 44 points, 77-33.

Bridgewater outscored the Fighting Squirrels down the stretch, scoring five of the last seven points to wrap up an 82-35 victory.

Mullen, Shelley and freshman Jessi Strom each tallied 11 points for the Eagles in the win. Freshman Cassidy Burkholder approached triple-double numbers with seven points, seven steals and eight assists. Strom also dished out eight assists in the win.

On the glass, Shelley pulled down a team-high eight rebounds as Bridgewater out-rebounded Mary Baldwin by a 65-to-41 tally.

Mary Baldwin was led on the evening by a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double from Washington.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday evening against Virginia Wesleyan. Tip off against the Marlins is set for 7 p.m.
