James Madison athletic director Jeff Bourne says he hopes to sign football coach Mickey Matthews to a contract extension "relatively soon."
Bourne said Thursday that the two sides are still working to complete a one-year extension, which would keep Matthews under contract through the 2013 season.
Matthews has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the head coaching vacancies at Virginia and Marshall.
Matthews is currently working under a contract he signed in February 2008, which pays him a base salary of $222,000, plus incentives.
Bourne says the proposed extension would not increase Matthews' base salary.
Matthews was out of his office recruiting, and couldn't be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.
