Backup quarterback Jace Edwards is expected to transfer from James Madison University after head coach Mickey Matthews granted the rising redshirt sophomore a release from the JMU football program.

In a release from JMU, head coach Mickey Matthews said this:

“Jace Edwards has asked for and been granted his release,” Head Coach Mickey Matthews said. “We appreciate everything he has done for the football program and athletic department at JMU. We wish him nothing but the best in his future plans.”

Edwards redshirted in 2010 but played in six games in 2011.

While starting quarterback Justin Thorpe served a five game suspension, Edwards became the starting quarterback.

JMU's record was 2-3 in games Edwards started.

In his career at JMU Edwards was 62-for-99 for 733 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Edwards, was suspended from spring football for a violation of team rules. Because Edwards was recovering from shoulder surgery, and already out for the entire spring session, he was suspended for the season opener in 2011.

Edwards is the second JMU quarterback to transfer from the school in 2012.

Now with Edwards all but gone from JMU, the Dukes remain deep at quarterback, but not deep in experience. Justin Thorpe, the current starter at quarterback will be a redshirt senior and is the only quarterback on the roster with game experience in college.

Dae'Quan Scott, the former R.E. Lee star has started a handful of games for the Dukes as a wildcat quarterback but is listed as a running back on the roster.

Michael Birdsong, Ian Fisher and Taylor Reynolds will all be true freshman for JMU this fall and played quarterback in high school. Mack Spees is also listed on the roster as a quarterback. Spees will be a redshirt sophomore.
