Hitchens Hits Game Winner, Dukes Get Past Hofstra

Humpty Hitchens hit a jumper from the left elbow with 2.8 seconds left to give James Madison a 62-60 win over Hofstra on Saturday, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

It was the second straight contest Hitchens delivered a late game-winner. His shot with 12 seconds left gave the Dukes a 60-58 win over Penn on Nov. 26. Hitchens finished with 20 points for James Madison -- the Dukes' first CAA opening win in four seasons.

The Dukes (4-2) trailed 47-37 with 11:15 remaining, and went on a 13-3 run to tie it at 50 with 7:02 left on Alioune Diouf's jumper.

A.J. Davis' three-point play put James Madison up 58-56 for its first lead of the second half with 1:03 remaining.

Davis added 12 points for the Dukes, who snapped a 12-game skid against Hofstra.

Mike Moore led Hofstra (3-5) with 24 points.
