For Jessica Evans, her mind is on her stride throughout the entire race.
She says it's what helps her reach the finish line.
“But running, it's just kind of weird how it makes you finish it even though you don't want to, but you just do. I find that so cool and that's why I like running,” said Jessica.
For her coach, it's her leadership that makes her standout.
“Jessica is a very gifted athlete. She's easy to coach, she listens well and she's a leader on the team. What I like about her is that she is very competitive,” said her coach Billy Sowers.
Jessica is an All-District Cross Country athlete and a star on the track. But she's just as successful in the classroom.
She has a 4.37 GPA at Robert E. Lee High School.
“I'm definitely interested in what I want to do in the future and that's a huge motivator. It's motivation for how much a study and the effort I put forth in class,” said Jessica.
For her teacher, it's a breath of fresh air to have her as a student.
“It is a challenge to have Jessica in class because I have had very few students since I've become a teacher who challenge me to be on the top of her game as she does,” said her teacher Bill Terry.
For the future, she is considering William and Mary, the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.
“At all three of those colleges, I will either major in biology or human biology. I think I want to be an orthodontist. At least that's what I'm telling myself,” said Jessica.
Her talent on the track and in the classroom is why Jessica is WHSV's Student Athlete of the Week.
