Harrisonburg High School's Jonas Zimmerman is a Blue Streak who's quick on the track and in the classroom.
A few deep breaths is all it takes for Jonas to focus as he takes the starting line.
"It gets you out there. You can run and clear your mind. I don't know, it makes me feel good just running," said Jonas.
His hard work and his love of running are why he's the captain of the track team.
"Jonas is a big leader by example. He's the next in a proud line of great distance runners we've had in our school. Not afraid to put in every step of running required and a little bit more," said his coach David Loughran.
Track isn't the only place where he takes the extra step. In the classroom, he has a 3.86 GPA and he's an avid artist.
"You just have a canvas and you can put down on the canvas whatever you want and have your own ideas put down. I try to clear my mind by doing some more artwork. It makes me feel a lot better," said Jonas.
His teacher sees his focus.
"When he sets his mind to something regardless of what it is, he is going to accomplish it. So regardless of whether it is running or his artwork or his other academic classes, he's going to complete it and he's going to do well," said his teacher Jauan Brooks.
For Jonas, high school is just the beginning. He has his eye on the finish line.
"I'm looking at a couple schools. I haven''t decided which one I would like to go to, that's still open. I would like to run and be on a team there. My major that I'm interested in now is somewhere in personal training and art. In the future be a personal trainer and help other people and athletes," said Jonas.
Harrisonburg High School's Jonas Zimmerman's skills on the track and in the classroom are why he's WHSV's Student Athlete of the Week.
