Janie Layne is a crucial player for Fort Defiance High School's volleyball team.
She's the captain of the team and a leader on the court.
She says it all stems from the love of the game.
“Volleyball is definitely my passion. Just the team chemistry that involves so much just to be successful, is just the most amazing aspect of it. And it just a family atmosphere. That's what I love about it,” said Janie.
As for her coach, its her endurance and diligence that makes her stand out.
“Janie is a joy to coach. Everyday she come ready to play. She has such a passion for the game of volleyball. She loves the game of volleyball. She loves the interaction with her team. Volleyball is the ultimate team sport, and she's there to make everyone around her better,” said Sue Leonard, Janie's coach.
Janie holds all-district and all-region honors for this past season.
Her efforts on the court equally transfer over to the classroom. She has a 4.10 GPA.
“In school I'm definitely motivated. I'm self motivated actually, because I just hate seedling for satisfactory it what ever I do. And if I don't get the grades I want to, I feel kind of upset. So I feel really accomplished after all my hard work,” said Janie.
“Janie was, she is an excellent student. Very personable, and remarkably well-mannered, and it was just a joy to have Janie in my class,” said Mike Riddell, Janie's teacher.
As for the future, she wants to keep education in sight.
“I plan to attend Bridgewater College, and major in Liberal Studies in order to become an elementary school educator, and hopefully teach in Augusta County,” said Janie.
Her success on the court and in the classroom is why Janie Layne is WHSV's Student Athlete of the Week.
