Tucker McCoy: WHSV Student Athlete of the Week March 5

PENN LAIRD, Va. (WHSV) -- Spotswood High School's Tucker McCoy is trying to lead his team to a state championship, but that's not the only reason his future is so bright.

"Countless hours of hard work. Just working hard during practice and setting an example for my teammates and then having my teammates push me with what they do during practice as well," said McCoy who is no stranger to hard work.

In fact, he is a two-sport standout.

"If you come out to Spotswood on any Saturdays or Sundays, you'll see him out here doing something with any sport, whether it be basketball, coming out here to get shots up, or baseball, just simply running or throwing," said Marcus Davis, Tucker's baseball coach.

That extra practice time has led to a bright future for Tucker as he's heading to JMU this fall on a baseball scholarship.

"It was a huge relief. A big weight was lifted off my shoulders. I'm just glad to know I can go to the next level and continue my education at JMU and play baseball there. It's a great program. I love the coaching staff and it's right in my backyard so I know a lot about it and am excited for it," said Tucker.

His love for sports spills into the classroom too as he maintains a 3.478 GPA and wants to continue improving that.

"When I kept winning as a kid, Just growing up you want to win in sports, so that carried into school wanting to be the best in school too. I know there are a lot of smarter kids than me, but I just wanted to be the best that I could be," said Tucker.

Being the best that he can be includes having a difficult major as Tucker wants to pursue a computer science degree while at JMU.

"What I see that sets him apart is his inner drive and motivation. He sets high goals for himself and he will push himself to achieve those goals. He's committed to whatever he does and want to do a good job," said Julie Cassetta, one of Tucker's teachers.
