Kay Norred is the News Director at WHSV, The Valley’s FOX, and CBS the V. All powered by WHSV. Kay has been fortunate to gain valuable insight and experience developing news content, by working in a wide variety of communities. She enjoys using that knowledge to shape and guide news coverage at WHSV, The Valley’s FOX, and CBS the V.
Kay joined the TV 3 news team in February of 2008. Before coming to the Valley, Kay worked as a producer, reporter and anchor in Tampa Bay, Florida. She has also worked in stations located in Pensacola and Tallahassee, Florida. She is a graduate of Florida State University where double-majored in Communications and Interdisciplinary Social Science.
During her 12 years in Tampa Bay, Kay covered a wide range of stories. She traveled to Istanbul, Turkey to document how first responders around the world are helping Florida's first responders prepare for natural, man-made, and biological/chemical disasters. She also covered the 2004 hurricane season which sent her to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi where Hurricane Katrina made landfall. She also completed a three-part sweeps piece on the U.S. Coast Guard where she shadowed "Coasties" on air, land, and sea.
Kay took home an American Heart Association Excellence in Cardiovascular Communications award for a story she wrote profiling a heart attack victim; reuniting him with the paramedics who saved his life. Her work has also been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and Women in Communication, Inc. Kay also teaches media relations training classes for Public Information Officers on behalf of FEMA at the nation's Emergency Management Institute and the Center for Domestic Preparedness. She currently serves as an at-large board member of the Virginia Associated Press, covering Virginia and West Virginia.
Kay is involved with the local community. She serves on Harrisonburg's Crime watch board and enjoys attending church and teaching Bible studies. She is excited to live in Harrisonburg with its rich history and breath-taking views. When she's not at work, Kay enjoys cooking, reading, working out, and spending time with pets.
