"I remember it like it was yesterday," Melinda reflects. "My dad was stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas and I was four years old. Our family always watched the six o-clock news, and my favorite part of the newscast was the weather. Back in those days computers were not capable of producing graphics with moveable surface features, so the meteorologists had to literally draw the weather. Well, I decided that I wanted to emulate the meteorologist. I borrowed my dad's chapstick and went to the bedroom that I shared with my sister to play weatherman. I took the top off the chapstick and proceeded to draw a map of the United States complete with sunshine, rain, and fronts. I was having a grand old time delivering the weather to my stuffed animals. I even had a Donnie and Marie microphone that I used. My mother came into the room to tell me to turn the microphone down a little when she noticed my handiwork. I scored points for creativity, but she wasn't pleased with the permanent stains on the wall. I bet the map is still there."
Melinda's parents saw the "writing on the wall," but it took her a little while to realize that meteorology was a field she wanted to pursue. Melinda graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications, with an emphasis in broadcasting and a concentration in Political Science. During her years at Carolina, she worked with Carolina News as a producer, reporter, and camera person. While living in New Orleans, Louisiana, Melinda worked at WWOZ 90.7 FM, New Orleans' only jazz and heritage station, as a morning personality. With the moniker of "Mo in the Morning,” she delivered news, traffic, and weather reports to hundreds of morning commuters. When not on-air, she worked as a news director and reporter. Melinda also worked in the music industry in New Orleans as a personal assistant at Burgess Management and Joseph Oliver Music. She was given the rare opportunity to see what really happens behind the scenes in the jazz music industry; from touring, contracts, music composition, film score composition, and recording. She misses the excitement of the music industry, but finds weather just as compelling and exciting. Melinda has a Certificate in Meteorology from Mississippi State University.
Since joining WHSV in May 2002, Melinda has worked as a weather producer and fill-in weathercaster; weekend weathercaster; and noon and 5:00 meteorologist. She has come full circle as a fill-in meteorologist with the birth of her first child in May 2007.
In her time away from the First Alert Storm Center, she enjoys cooking, baking, gardening, reading, playing the piano, listening to music, supporting her beloved and we mean dearly beloved Tar Heels, and spending time with her wonderful husband, Christopher, and beautiful daughter Audrey Lily. She is also active in various church and community organizations.
