Broadway's Nathan Hooven admits, he didn't always have quality grades.

"Back in elementary school I didn't get the best grades, but as I got up and started playing football, that's when I started getting really serious," says Hooven.

"Nate's a good student," says teacher Kevin Turner. "He's always prompt with his assignments. He's easy going in class. He's a very thoughtful individual."

Now, Hooven has above a 4.0 GPA. He has plans to join the Air Force and become a SERE instructor.

"Which is a person who would teach pilots who get shot down how to survive, how to evade," says Hooven. "If they get captured, how to resist torture, give information, stuff like that."

This season is the first time Hooven's played wide receiver for the Gobblers, but it seems like he's played the position all four years. He currently leads the Massanutten District in catches and receiving yards.

"He was our backup quarterback for the last two years, but one of the things we wanted to do as a staff is to get him involved in the offense somehow and put him at wide receiver," says head football coach Brad Lutz. "He's done a great job."

"It's crazy, I didn't expect it at all," adds Hooven. "I expected to go out, just play, not get much attention, just go out there and do my job. To be leading the district, that wasn't a goal I set or anything like that."

Lutz says Hooven's a kid you can always count on.

"He's the reason why guys want to coach high school football," says Lutz. "I mean he's a blue collar kid who does everything right, not only on the field but in the classroom. He's a tough worker."
