It's safe to say Katy Bergey can shoot a basketball.

Bergey averaged nearly 20 points a game last season at Eastern Mennonite as a junior, while earning All-Conference and All-State honors.

"She's a pure shooter, so we're going to get her the ball a lot," says basketball coach Luanne Zimmerman. "I don't think anybody on this team can imagine playing without Katy on the court."

Bergey is only 12 points away from reaching 1000 for her career.

"That's going to be great," says Zimmerman. "We think she will break that in the first game [this season], and hopefully, she's off to the races after that."

That would be the race to the school's scoring record, which Bergey is on pace to break.

"My sister actually played with Emily Mullet, who is the leader, and I remember watching her and really admiring her," says Bergey. "I would never believe it if you told me in 7th grade that I would [possibly] break her record."

Bergey has also been the Flames' No. 1 seed in tennis since she was a sophomore, earning All-Conference awards since.

She has another number she's proud of, and that's over a 4.0 GPA in the classroom. Bergey has plans to attend William & Mary and major in accounting.

"I've always enjoyed Math, and I feel like I handle my money very well."

"As an athlete, she knows how to get the work done in limited time in her evenings, and I respect that greatly," says teacher Elwood Yoder.
