HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- WHSV, Martin's and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank kicked off the Stuff a Truck campaign. September is Hunger Action Month and they're encouraging you to learn about hunger in your community and what you can do to help.
Ruth Jones with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank said people don't realize how many of our neighbors are hungry.
"It's very prevalent in our community but it often goes hidden, so I think it's a really important month to talk about whats really going on behind the scenes," said Jones.
Jones said after the recession the jobs that were becoming available were either part time or low paying.
"A lot of people who were once doing well, are having a hard time finding a job that pays well. That's really the story of a lot of our clients right now and those are the people you will be helping," said Jones.
Martin's will host the food donation truck waiting to be filled. The food bank asks for donations of non perishable items, such as canned foods and personal care items to name a few.
Jones says the summer time is the slowest time of year for volunteers and donations.
"I just think hunger is not really top of mind in the summer months. We receive our strongest support during the holiday season. Now is a really great time to fill the shelves and Stuff a Truck is a great way to do that," said Jones
You can Stuff a Truck, Friday September 13th, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Martin's locations in Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Front Royal and Winchester.
