A Virginia company is seeking approval for a proposed $250 million wind farm in West Virginia.

Arlington, Virginia-based AES Corporation wants to build up to 65 turbines on a ridge top near Elkins that would connect to an existing Allegheny Energy transmission line.

The company filed an application two weeks ago seeking the West Virginia Public Service Commission's approval of the project. Several other state and federal agencies also must approve the wind farm.

AES says the turbines could begin transmitting electricity by the end of 2009. The company would sell the electricity to PJM Interconnection of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, which operates the Mid-Atlantic's power grid.

AES says the project is expected to create up to 279 temporary construction jobs and 19 permanent jobs.

Five people have filed letters of protest with the PSC opposing the project.
